As well as this dramatic equality, there’s something else that’s central to this revival of the original series (which ran from 1971 to 1975), and that’s a longing for the past and a sadness at ageing and change. There’s a beautiful little scene with Marsh, who reprises her role as the housemaid Rose, when she puts her hand on the banister at Eaton Place and suddenly the wrinkles are smeared out and disappear, and for a second – maybe two – she can see her youth again and is melancholic about the loss of it.
